About the Nintendo Switch
People ask, "why is this system so popular now?" Well, there are three reasons.
First is portability. For the first time, the console can act as a home console and a portable system. It offers people the best experience of both worlds. It even has multiplayer on the go by detaching the joycons and using it as a controller.
Second is the pricing. Usually, home consoles would be quite pricy since it has many features and high-resolution experience. However, the Switch is compatible with having the same features but with less cost ($300).
Finally, Nintendo launched one of the best games when it first debut. It includes Zelda: Breath of the Wild, following up with Super Mario Odyssey. Today, the Switch is still doing successful, especially with all the variety of games released for the console.
Best Nintendo Switch Games
Xenoblade Chronicles 2
BEST RPG
Number of Players: 1
Overview
I would say the sequel has improved significantly compared to the original version besides the plot, not to mention, the parcel is not bad at all. The main story itself is far better than most games these days.
The story still gives you an epic, emotional ride with a bit of comedy throughout the game. The world of Alrest is beautiful, and you would never get bored with the landscapes surrounding you while going through the story.
The game has a long adventure to follow, but it is very bearable. There is never a time where the game felt repetitive or boring. Countless secrets to discover and tons of contents that are all in one package. Xenoblade has one of the most charismatic and memorable characters in the game.
I personally never had any dull moments with any antagonist and protagonist characters. It's mind-boggling how there is so much variety of weapons and other items. It's great because when you think you know everything, there will always something new to discover while on your journey.
Critiques
There were some technical issues during the beginning of the game, especially playing handheld mode. The game would freeze on a rare occasion. However, the developers patched these problems. Another issue was the quest's descriptions can be vague at times, which may leave some frustrations.
Pokemon: Sword and Shield
BEST RPG Runner-Up
Number of Players: 1-4
Overview
Ahh, yes, Pokemon. I have been a Pokemon fan since I was in the womb of my mother, and that says a lot coming from me.
Now, there has been some controversy about the new release Pokemon game. One of the biggest complaints was that Thanos snaps his finger, and half of the Pokemon species are gone. However, Gamefreak recently made 2 DLCs to expand to Pokedex and more content. Personally, the DLC definitely helped out the game. More content and more gameplay. The graphics are better than the previous generation, yet, I think it could have been more polish.
On the bright side, the idea of an open-world Pokemon game was everyone's dream to have for a while. Seeing your favorite childhood Pokemon and the new additional Pokemon roaming around in their environment was exciting to witness.
Another great addition to the game is how competitive Pokemon is a lot easier for the hardcore fans of competing. So many features to boost up your team to participate in tournaments or play against your friends.
The new gimmick, dynamaxing, took a while to get used to it, but later, it kind of grew on me. Still would rather have mega-evolutions than this gimmick.
Critiques
The game itself is not hard at all, I felt like the game was trying to hold my hand throughout the story. It would be awesome if GameFreak would add a difficulty setting for the hardcore fans, who want to challenge themselves. There were some technical issues during the gameplay. One incident was getting stuck from specific areas, but I believe GameFreak fixed the problems.
Splatoon 2
BEST SHOOTER
Number of Players: 1-4
Overview
If you like the first Splatoon, you would love the sequel because it has much more content. A must-have for switch owners. Hundreds of hours of shooting paint all over people's faces (if you know what I mean).
All jokes aside, there are various competitive online multiplayer modes such as Salmon Run, a team-based zombie mode. If you do get tired of multiplayer mode, there is a new expansion pack called "Octo Canyon" and "Octo Expansion Single-player mode."
Each package has its own enjoyable level for all players and quite essential to purchase. Nintendo took this series in a great approach to building up this game.
Critiques
Sometimes the internet server during online multiplayer has some issues. The biggest problem was having a significant lag while playing online.
DOOM
BEST SHOOTER Runner-Up
Number of Players: 1
Overview
How can I define DOOM in a simple sentence? Fast-paced and a bloody exciting game. DOOM has initially been for players on the PC, then Nintendo decided to import the DOOM series on the Switch.
Everyone asks if DOOM on the Switch would have the same controls and experience as PC and PS4, the answer is yes to an extent. Though the visuals are not the same as other consoles, numerous things are going on, and it all happens at a fast pace.
You can expect the same bloody shooter experience, such as the previous series. However, I would recommend having a pro controller because the joy-cons are more challenging to get used to.
Overall, the Nintendo developers did a great job of pleasing my expectations. My thoughts on Nintendo continuing on importing big-name titles are heading in the right direction. Looking forward to what the future holds for the upcoming imported games!
Critiques
Though the visuals are reasonable, it is still a downgrade compared with the other consoles (PC and PS4). The joy-cons can be challenging to use, especially if you are new to playing the DOOM series. I would highly recommend purchasing a pro controller.
The Jackbox Party Pack
BEST PARTY GAME
Number of Players: 1-8
Overview
There are currently 6 games in this series. I remember playing this game with my cousins every time there was a family gathering. All the aunts and uncles would be talking in their own circle, while my cousins and I would be playing Super Smash Bros, Mario Party, or The Jackbox Party game. I got to say, these games contain loads of laughs.
The Jackbox series is unique in a way because it is not your regular party game. You have to use your phone or other mobile devices as a controller. Once everyone has connected to the internet, you can all join the lobby to play all of these minigames.
There are a wide variety of games that will keep you and everyone entertained. Also, if you and your friends are old enough, you all can create a drinking game to add some more excitement.
My personal favorites are Quiplash and Fakin' It. All in all, the amount of content at a cheap price, I would consider purchasing this game. Just make sure to bring your favorite drinks to keep things spicy!
Critiques
Though some addicting mini-games stood out, some games were "ok" or not fun at all. There are a couple of games that only support single-player, which I find odd since it is intended to be a party game.
Super Mario Party
BEST PARTY GAME Runner-Up
Number of Players: 1-8
Overview
The gameplay itself did not have any dramatic changes. You still have your classic gameplay were you and your friends go around a giant board and collect all of the stars before the timer ends. The new Mario Party game added some new modes to play.
The game takes advantage of the Switch's versatility. River Survival is amusing to have with friends around, Partner Party has more freedom on where you move around the map, and it's pure enjoyment in general.
The best mode I recommend for everyone is Challenge Road, which involves you to complete all 80 mini-games. You can also adjust the difficulty setting to expert if you like a good challenge. It is not the perfect game. However, I would say it is accessible if you ever have a gathering with your friends and family.
Critiques
If you want to play Super Mario Party with a handheld or a pro controller, you are out of luck. You are forced to use a joy-con controller for each player. Personally, for me, it was a letdown because using those small joy-cons can be a hassle. However, if you do not mind using it, it shouldn't be a big deal. One more criticism I would say is the lack of 4 player mini-games. Currently, there are only ten of them.
Super Mario Odyssey
BEST ACTION
Number of Players: 1
Overview
When you think the Super Mario franchise is fading, boom, it comes back with a punch. The most-anticipated game for the Nintendo Switch when it first came out. The spirit of Super Mario 64 lives on in this game.
This title itself hit you differently. It is rare to find a game with a great story-telling and an action-packed adventure simultaneously. The visuals and motion controls feel so enhance. There are different types of environments than your usual Super Mario games like Mario Sunshine and Super Mario World.
However, Odyssey follows the same influence with its past counterparts, but with a different twist. The music is oscar worthy, in my opinion. Cappy is a unique addition to your adventure, and it never seems like an annoying side-kick to be around. Overall, this is a must-have game if you are a switch owner.
Critiques
No multiplayer mode, which would be awesome to have while playing through your Mario adventure, but honestly, it is not a big issue because the game itself was still amazing. However, the difficulty in this game can be slightly lacking. It would be awesome if there was a difficulty setting before you start a new game. Hopefully, all of the future Mario games will have that option.
Bayonetta 2
BEST ACTION Runner-Up
Number of Players: 1
Overview
Nintendo's favorite "naughty" demon slayer will keep you entertained throughout the whole story. To be honest, I didn't know much about Bayonetta until I played Super Smash Bros. Afterwards, I was curious and checked out the first Bayonetta game. I did not regret it at all and wanted to play the sequel version.
It has some great gameplay, some of which have combos that may take a while to pull off, however, there are excessive tutorials that will help practice your skills.
The story is excellent, yet kind of short, but there are a dozen challenges they will keep yourself occupied. Regardless, the story has full of action-packed content for everyone to enjoy.
The graphics are a mild upgrade from the prequel, and the frame rate is a lot smoother, which helps pull off combos much better. Overall, this action-packed game is something to consider and be on the lookout for the future series!
Critiques
The story was great, but it was short, with about 8 to 10 hours of gameplay. If there was more content and maybe more side quests during the main story, it would be acceptable.
Celeste
BEST GAME UNDER $20
Number of Players: 1
Overview
The controls are smooth and straightforward, but some of the new mechanic requires you to have perfect precision and timing.
The challenges throughout the game are frustrating because you tend to die many times as the game progresses. It's like a mini Dark Souls game where every mistake can cause your death. However, it's not a type of game where you will rage quit but makes you think and reset on your mistakes. Nonetheless, the number of challenges you accomplish, the more rewarding it is.
The character in the story is great to follow along. The story itself focuses on more of an emotional side, which many people would be touched.
In the end, I can see many people enjoying this game based on the controls, gameplay, and challenges. For the amount of content at a low price, I highly recommend checking this game out!
Critiques
The games ends pretty fast. That is the biggest downfall because you would get so engaged with the game, then a couple of hours later, it is all finished.
Super Smash Bros Ultimate
BEST COMPETITIVE
Number of Players: 1-8
Overview
The Smash series is what defines a "perfect" match for everyone that wants to get into competitive gaming or casual gaming. For the past 20+ years, Super Smash Bros never seems to disappoint anyone. It is what everyone has asked for with all favorite characters, endless stages, amazing soundtracks, new and old modes from previous Smash series.
Having a collection of video game nostalgia from your beloved franchise is such a refreshing feeling. It's the ultimate competitive game and the ultimate party game to have when your friends come over. The best way to ruin friendships when you want to one v one someone, but also the best way to create associations for those who are Smash lovers.
Critiques
Sometimes the online section can be brutal since there can be lag during your matches with people around the world.
Dead Cells
BEST 2D GAME
Number of Players: 1
Overview
The minute you start playing this game, you will become addicted. The graphics are hands-down gorgeous with all the details put into this pixel artwork. Music is always important to me when it comes to gaming, and I found the soundtracks to be addictive, even when I am not playing the game. I would have it on my playlist because it's that good.
The writing in the story is passible. It focuses on the character, who is stuck in a prison cell on an island, and you are figuring out how to break out. However, the humor in this game is quite funny to an extend.
The only problem I had in this game is that it does not give you a tutorial, and it brings you down to the deep waters. You have to figure out everything on your own, which is not bad; personally, I love a good challenge. Yet, I am not sure if that would apply to everyone else. Overall, I never had any dull moments playing the story and recommend anyone who loves a good challenge!
Critiques
There is no tutorial in the beginning, and you have to figure out everything on your own.
Puyo Puyo Tetris
BEST PUZZLE
Number of Players: 1-2
Overview
What do you get when you mix two of the "best" puzzle series games on one screen? A simple but excellent match between two old popular franchises. It's like if Marvel vs. DC or Godzilla vs. Gamera!
All jokes aside, this game is delightful with even more packed content. It comes with a split-screen to play two players and has a stable online mode.
With this new edition, it offers tons of multiplayer options if you ever have a lot of time to kill—one of the Switch hidden gem games that you can find on the E-Shop. I highly recommend it if you ever commute to work and get nothing to do in your spare time.
Critiques
It does get kind of repetitive as you play it for a while.
Fire Emblem: Three Houses
BEST STRATEGY GAME
Number of Players: 1
Overview
Fire Emblem is one of my favorite series recently on the Nintendo Switch. This game has so much gameplay content, which took me about 80 hours to complete the main story. Nowadays, many games only have 20+ hours of gameplay, which is insane. While playing 80 hours of the main story, it never gave me any dull moments. Never that, I got tired of being distracted by all the side missions thrown on my face.
The anime-style cutscenes were terrific to watch, it almost felt like I'm watching something that could be in theaters.
My favorite part of the game is that you can change the difficulty. For example, if you finish the game in normal mode, you can create another account to change the challenge to wherever you want. Another option is that you can connect to a classic style, where the mode enables the death feature. Meaning that if your character dies, it stays dead—another way to challenge yourself and create a careful approach to your strategies. Whether or not you are a Fire Emblem fan or not, this game is a must-have!
Critiques
The graphic does tend to look a little flat and have some low-quality renders. It can be distracting when you pinpoint those bits of flaws.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
BEST ADVENTURE GAME
Number of Players: 1
Overview
The Zelda series came a long way, and at this point, it finally evolved into something where other games can lean on. Breath of the Wild is truly a masterpiece when it comes to the whole idea around the open-world.
The story of Breath of the Wild has one of the best seller stories in the franchise. Starting in an atypical storyline, however, instead of going to a random town, Link goes directly to the open world.
At the beginning of the game, it can start a bit slow and lonely, but as the story progresses, you are hit straight away from many side requests and fantastic adventures to the point that you forgot there is an actual storyline. The visuals are unbelievable, and you can spend countless hours enjoying the vast world Nintendo build for us.
Critiques
Not much of a con, but there are so many side requests that you forget about the story.
Luigi's Mansion 3
BEST ADVENTURE GAME Runner-Up
Number of Players: 1-8
Overview
I remember playing the original Luigi's Mansion on GameCube and whenever I go to a local McDonalds (which was super random when I look back at it). However, when Nintendo announced that there will be a new Luigi's Mansion, I was already sold on the idea.
Luigi's Mansion has everything from the previous prequels with more added features that make this game unique. Though the combat and the storyline are straightforward, the new features helped make up the experience better.
The character itself, Luigi, had some goofy and light-hearted moments, which sparks up the story. Visuals are a huge step up from the original with a vibrant and aesthetic atmosphere.
Every level in the game felt different with its own puzzles to solve. Luigi's Mansion 3 is a fantastic game overall. It is packed with an entertaining and left a smile on my face continuously.
Critiques
Cutscenes were alright, but it would be more efficient if there was voice acting instead of "mumble speech." Beating the bosses was satisfying, but as the game progress, it felt a bit repetitive defeating the base enemies and bosses since they all die the same way. If there was more variety on defeating the enemies, it would make the game more satisfying.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons
BEST SIMULATION GAME
Number of Players: 1
Overview
For the people who are not familiar with the Animal Crossing series, it is a life simulation game where you take your time to build your own island. It will also form a relationship with your fellow villagers and do outdoor activities such as catching bugs and fishing.
This is one of those games where the story is not as important, but more focus on building up your own "empire."
Animal Crossing offers a peaceful everyday life experience as a villager. This includes the ability to create your own furniture and housing by simplifying finding resources and crafting it.
One of the biggest problems for Switch users is that you are limited to building up only one island. This can be a deal-breaker for people who share an account together. Other than that, it is an enjoyable experience to have as a solo player game.
Critiques
Only have one island per console limitation, so if you want to build another island, you have to buy a whole new console. It also restricts other profile users in your Switch to perform other activities on the island if you're not the switch owner.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
BEST RACING GAME
Number of Players: 1-4
Overview
One of the greatest multiplayer racing games right now. No other racing Nintendo games cannot compare with Mario Kart 8. If you have been following the Mario Kart series during your early years of life, you will not regret purchasing it.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has your traditional racing game but has graphics that are high quality with some extra features that include a revamped battle mode, various old/new courses, returning characters, and tons of content.
Another unique style is called Renegade Roundup, which uses the Piranha Plant to introduce a cops and robbers theme. For example, the racers would attach the plants to their vehicles to catch and transfers other runners to win the game.
The little features and modes adds-in the flavor in the game. Mario Kart can be used for inviting their friends over for a pizza party or the hardcore players who spend hours perfecting time trials. It is a no-brainer for every Nintendo Switch owner to purchase this game.
Critiques
Single-player is still basically like the previous Mario Kart series.
Super Mario Maker 2
BEST FOR KIDS
Number of Players: 1-4
Overview
One of the most popular games on the Wii U has finally come to the Switch. I was extremely excited to get my hands on the sequel when it first came out. The game still had its traditional setups, but there are new features that were added as well.
The most prominent feature is online-multiplayer. Instead of the 100-Mario Challenge, there are now endless challenge mode. You can now access the touchscreen to your Switch in handheld mode while building.
What caught me by surprise is how the new Mario Maker has an actual story mode. It was not anything mind-boggling, yet it was still interesting to follow along.
If you haven't played Super Mario Maker and want to learn how to build your own platform, I would start off with story mode. It is a great way to understand how the game functions and gives you an idea to be creative.
Overall, the game is fun but straightforward, especially if you have children in your household. I think it is a great way to keep your child entertained and think creatively.
Critiques
The online-multiplayer was one of the most significant flaws because you need a stable internet connection to enjoy building or playing with other people's platforms. The worst-case scenarios online are the lag, and it could be quite a drag.
Pokemon: Let's Go, Pikachu & Eevee!
BEST CASUAL GAME
Number of Players: 1-2
Overview
The gameplay is what you would expect from the past Pokemon series. When you start your game, you pick your favorite starter, travel across the region and collect all eight badges, and become the Pokemon league champion. There is only a couple of new features here and there.
The one feature that stands out the most is that there are Pokemon you can encounter in the open-world. Plus, it has the same features on Pokemon Go, where you catch the Pokemon by using your joy-con.
The music is always a pleaser with the older audience. It gives you that nostalgia. As a Pokemon fan and competitor, I wasn't too on board with Nintendo's approach since there are many remakes of the first generation of Pokemon.
Currently still waiting on the Diamond and Pearl remake. However, I do understand that there is a new generation of audiences that are getting into Pokemon. So if you don't know much about Pokemon, then I recommend checking this game out.
Critiques
It can be too easy, even for casual players. While playing the game, I felt like my hand was being held throughout my adventure. It is easier to defeat the gym leaders and other trainers than before. If you are a competitive Pokemon player, then this game will not suit you.
Nintendo LABO
BEST EDUCATIONAL GAME
Number of Players: 1-2
Overview
I found this game to be surprisingly great since not many people were talking about this game. Probably because it is not your typical traditional game. Instead, you have to build the game before even playing it.
Nintendo LABO has an exciting feature that makes this game so unique. If you purchase, every LABO box includes cardboard kits to build the accessories for the game. There are over 20 types of cardboard.
You are spending excessive hours on creating different special builds like a piano, fishing pole, cars, and more. Once you finish building your box, attach the joy-con, and start playing games with them.
Critiques
There are great games in the LABO; however, some games tend to be "too easy" even for the casual player.
Ring Fit Adventure
BEST GAME FOR EXERCISE
Number of Players: 1-2
Overview
Do you like to work out, but don't want to keep commuting to your gym? Sometimes we want to find ways to exercise inside of our homes. Well, Nintendo recently dropped an adaptable system for us to work out at home.
The Ring Fit Adventure is a way to plug your Switch to your TV screen or wherever you choose to go for the best quality of building your muscles.
This game comes with unique accessories called the "Ring-Con and Leg Strap," which can track your movement. It's an adventure where you can defeat your enemies while combining with different types of workouts.
Critiques
The price is high.
